Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs)

Marine Conservation Zones are a type of Marine Protect Areas. They are designated to protect nationally important examples of rare or threatened habitats and species in England. TheĀ Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 provides the legal framework under which MCZs are established.

There are currently 91 MCZs in English water, three of which can be found on the inshore section of the North East coast. These are:
